Achievements

For any business to be successful, employee recognition is a necessary factor to keep morale high and thus employees performing their best. It is a proven fact that employee engagement and effectiveness is highest when individuals feel that their work is appreciated and making a difference in the success of the company. When an employee doesn’t feel valued or that their work makes much of a difference to the company, their quality of work generally decreases as well as their morale. Showing your appreciation for employees and their achievements doesn’t have to be a difficult task however. There are a few easy ways in which you can incorporate employee recognition for achievements into your HR practices. Here are 5 tips to get started:Achievements1) Public Thank You’s
For starters, a public thank you is free and easy to accomplish. A great way to accomplish this is at the beginning or end of a department or company meeting. Specifically addressing an individual in front of a group of their peers singles them out in a good way, showing you believe their work has gone above and beyond the performance of others. Another way to give a public thank you is to include it in a company email, or send out a separate public email to thank individuals for a superb job in going above and beyond. The latter option is less personal however, so note that it may not be the most effective way to recognize large achievements.

2) Have a Celebration Lunch

Although this option is not free, the fact that it costs money can also show a different level of appreciation for an employee. An appreciation lunch can also be done in many ways. The employee’s immediate supervisor could take them out to lunch one on one, or with the department. Taking an individual, or the department, out to lunch for a job well done is also a great way to get to know your employees on a more personal level and establish trust amongst each other. If a lunch out of the office is out of the company budget, try ordering in. Setting aside time to show your appreciation by sharing a meal together is the important part of showing appreciation in this way.

3) Awarding Lapel Pins
Awarding lapel pins is a common, cost effective way to commemorate a specific achievement of an employee. Many companies award various lapel pins when an employee has reached a certain number of years with the company for example. Some companies commemorate milestones such as 5, 10, 15, or more years with a company by awarding lapel pins of gold, silver, or other long lasting metals.

4) Company Functions
A company function can be anything from an elaborate holiday party to a monthly organized pot-luck. Just planning a time for employees to spend time with each other and have a small break from work can show that you care about their well-being and strive to create an environment where they can not only work but also enjoy themselves.

5) Award Small Gift Cards
A great, cost effective way to show appreciation for small achievements is to award small gift cards. This could be something like a $5 or $10 gift card to a nearby coffee shop. These should only be awarded for small attainable goals however. Awarding a small gift for accomplishing a major milestone could be insulting.
