The ISE Limited hybrid drive system powers BC Transit’s entire fleet of 20 fuel cell hybrid buses and this fleet constitutes the world’s largest zero-emission bus fleet in operation today.

SAN DIEGO – (February 24, 2010) – Bus travelers in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, are riding greener because of 20 zero-emission, fuel cell hybrid buses produced by California-based ISE Limited (TSX: ISE). ISE’s hybrid drive system technology is helping BC Transit progress into a low carbon future.

Rick Sander, CEO and President of ISE, said “This is an exciting opportunity for visitors from all over the world to see the commercial strength and viability of these hybrid buses. This represents another milestone for ISE as a global leader in zero-emission hybrid technologies for a cleaner world.” The BC Transit fleet is comprised of 20 hybrid buses that use ISE’s core technologies in the complete hybrid propulsion system: energy storage, controls software and power electronics. The hybrid buses also use Ballard fuel cells and New Flyer chassis.

ISE Limited Conducted Rigorous Performance Tests

Since ISE was first selected to provide the drive systems inside these state-of-the-art vehicles, ISE has conducted hundreds of complex and rigorous performance tests over more than 12 months to ensure their safety, reliability, and performance in extreme conditions.

To assess operational performance ratings in freezing weather and on tough terrains, cold chamber testing was conducted on each hybrid fuel cell vehicle. The low temperature assessments test safety as well as optimal functionality in temperatures as low as -20C. These tests provide real-world data regarding operation and reliability of the hybrid fuel cell vehicles in environments that simulate the coldest winter temperatures in Vancouver.

Road testing was conducted over tens of thousands of accrued miles/kilometres, generating critical durability, reliability, and operational performance data. A significant amount of this performance data was collected via ISE’s proprietary Remote Diagnostic Unit (RDU).

Alex Bernasconi, Sr. Vice President, Sales and Marketing, said “It is especially important to ISE that we ensure a smooth operation of the hybrid buses because we know the hybrid buses are one of the green highlights of the 2010 Winter Games. The exhaustive testing that we conducted prior to the delivery of the fleet was essential to ensuring safety and reliability. Our service team is currently in British Columbia during the games, as part of our commitment to BC Transit.”

Tavin Tyler, Director of Fuel Cell Bus Programs, said “Because our drive system does not burn fossil fuel, there is a nearly non-existent environmental impact. This translates into increased safety and lower maintenance costs.” The ISE fuel cell hybrid system powering these buses converts the chemical energy of hydrogen to mechanical energy. The combination of hydrogen and oxygen in the fuel cell powers the electric drive system without any carbon exhaust.

After the conclusion of the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, the fuel cell hybrid buses will remain in service throughout specified routes determined by BC Transit. Local riders will benefit from smoother and quieter commutes as a result of ISE’s fuel cell hybrid technology powering each bus. Because hydrogen fuel only emits water vapour, there is no exhaust odour of Nitrogen Oxides, black tailpipe soot (particulate matter), or polluting carbon dioxides.

America’s largest transit fleet of ISE gasoline hybrid-electric buses, operated by Long Beach Transit in California, has reduced tons of harmful carbon emissions over the past 5 years.

SAN DIEGO – (Marketwire – December 21, 2009) – California-based ISE Corporation announced today that one of its earliest customers, Long Beach Transit (LBT), has reached 10 million miles in revenue service with their fleet of 40’ gasoline hybrid-electric buses powered by ISE’s hybrid-electric technology. Using ISE’s Ultracapacitor energy storage packs, the gasoline hybrid systems make up the majority of LBT’s bus fleet. Since 2001, ISE has continued strengthening its proven track record with nearly 300 gasoline hybrid-electric buses worldwide with a total accumulation of approximately 13 million operational miles.

“Long Beach Transit was one of the first transit agencies to deploy ISE’s gasoline hybrid-electric technology. We are proud that LBT chose to be an early adopter of our technology. Their participation has helped further our growth and innovation while providing strong proof of the reliability and performance of our energy systems for hybrid vehicles,” says Rick Sander, CEO and President of ISE Corporation.

Gasoline Hybrid-Electric Technology Reduces Carbon Emissions and Improves Operational Efficiencies

“We’d like to thank ISE Corporation for being such great partners,” said Rolando Cruz, Executive Director of Vice President of Maintenance and Facilities at Long Beach Transit. “ISE’s engineering team has worked closely with us to make their technology fit our needs. If asked to make the same investment today, we wouldn’t hesitate to make the same decision we made back in 2004 when we selected ISE’s technology.” ISE gasoline hybrid-electric drive systems give transit agencies an alternative to diesel-fueled buses while providing quieter operation and simple exhaust after-treatment. In addition, gasoline is a cleaner burning fuel with lower tailpipe emissions – as evidenced by the fact that one gallon of gasoline burned emits 13% (2.9 lbs) less CO2 than one gallon of diesel.

Juan Vigil, Long Beach Transits’ QA and Maintenance Technology Manager added, “ISE’s gasoline hybrid buses have enabled us to dramatically reduce the frequency of routine brake replacements, which cuts our expenses and reduces downtime due to maintenance. The increased performance of ISE’s technology adds value through passenger safety and greater operational efficiency. In these times of economic challenge for transit organizations, technologies that provide significant financial advantages are invaluable.” Increased brake life – which is the result of regenerative braking functionality – is a valuable byproduct of the way ISE hybrid-electric systems efficiently manage energy.

ISE hybrid technologies enhance the management of energy, which is the core process that makes any vehicle a hybrid. ISE energy management capabilities enable energy to be stored, controlled, and converted into usable form within the hybrid vehicle. This management of energy results in greater fuel efficiency and lower tailpipe emissions. The company’s proven systems provide a solution to the industry’s demand for reliable, safe, and cost-effective energy technologies.

Alex Bernasconi, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at ISE Corporation said, “We’re delighted to be working with the Long Beach Transit system. They are a tremendous example of how every city, county and transit organization can benefit from increased operational efficiency and cleaner transportation systems in their marketplace. Our technology is leading the way within the transportation industry and we’re committed to working closely with other transit systems that seek to benefit from ISE’s enhanced technologies.”

ISE energy storage systems provide a comprehensive solution that is highly reliable, scalable, and capable of meeting the extreme demands of heavy duty hybrid vehicles and industrial applications in a stable, reliable way.

SAN DIEGO – (Marketwire – November 9, 2009) – California-based ISE Corp has reached a new milestone in its energy storage roadmap which meets the industry’s demand for reliable, safe, and cost-effective energy storage technology. Built from the ground up, ISE has incorporated 8 years of engineering evolution and put the company ahead of the curve in providing energy storage systems to hybrid vehicle manufacturers.

Rick Sander, CEO and President of ISE, says, “Energy storage is at the core of any hybrid-powered vehicle. ISE is moving the transportation industry one step closer to zero emissions by downsizing engines, thereby reducing emissions and improving fuel economy and putting energy storage at the forefront to create a new hybrid energy paradigm.” Since 1999, ISE has integrated its energy storage technology into its own hybrid drive systems. Now, the company is moving forward by standardizing its controls interface to allow other manufacturers to easily integrate ISE’s energy storage technologies into their own applications.

Energy storage technologies built from the ground up

ISE’s energy storage technologies have been primarily developed in the transit industry, a market application that provides an excellent platform enabling innovation through government subsidies that support the design of systems that can meet stringent standards in high duty cycle, rugged environments. ISE’s investment into the continued development of its ultra-capacitor systems has resulted in a vast energy storage knowledge base, and enabled the company to widen its product set to include lithium power systems.

Regarding the company’s lithium power systems, Rob Del Core, ISE’s Director of Business Development Energy Storage Systems, says, “Recent sales of ISE’s lithium power systems to Ashok-Leyland and Tata Motors in India are proving that our technologies are capable of addressing the latest challenges in energy storage in a viable, competitive way that meets the high volume demands of these manufacturers.” ISE’s power dense lithium energy storage product expands its line of energy storage product offerings to meet a variety of power and energy requirements for a range of duty cycles.

High-Quality Systems for Heavy-Duty Applications

One design benefit of ISE’s latest energy storage offering is its environmentally sealed (IP67) and liquid-cooled format, which provides added integrity and allows vehicle integrators to mount the system anywhere, including underneath the bus or truck. ISE’s modular cassette design is light weight and scalable, which simplifies and reduces manufacturing and maintenance costs. The modular architecture also makes upgrading easier as cell technology advances.

ISE has amassed a solid knowledge base about energy storage for heavy duty hybrid vehicle applications and this knowledge base puts the company ahead of the curve with key advantages including extensive bench and field testing as well as modular, scalable design with a compact form factor. Individual cell monitoring and balancing facilitates integrated thermal management and redundant safety capabilities. Alex Bernasconi, Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing, says, “Creating technologies from the ground up requires a significant time investment, and we are fortunate to have the engineering talent and industry support to be in the leadership position we are in today.” While many companies are still encountering roadblocks along the energy storage path, ISE has surmounted these challenges and created a proven, production-ready solution.

Gasoline hybrid drive systems reduce environmental impact and offer advantages over conventional diesel via simple exhaust after-treatment, quieter operation, and lower PM, CO2, and NOx tailpipe emissions

SAN DIEGO – (Marketwire – October 22, 2009) – The historic unveiling of LeeTran’s first ultra low emission gasoline hybrid drive system from ISE Corp will take place in Jacksonville, Florida on Monday, October 26th. The unveiling will occur at the Florida Public Transportation Association (FPTA) Annual Meeting and Expo at the Omni Hotel in the outdoor expo area at 3:30 p.m. EST. Attending the ribbon-cutting event will be Steve Myers, Lee County Transit’s Director; Larry Ralston, Maintenance Manager; Paul Goyette, Operations Manager; and Alex Bernasconi, Sr. VP of Sales and Marketing of ISE Corp, along with other ISE representatives.

ISE’s gasoline hybrid technology was developed in response to the California Air Resources Board 2005 regulation. This regulation inspired innovative solutions for lowering emissions in heavy-duty vehicles. ISE’s technology helps transit agencies, such as Fort Myers’ LeeTran, easily meet new EPA requirements. With ISE’s technology, agencies can avoid some of the extra retrofitting required with conventional diesel buses that increases vehicle weight and cost, including having to add complicated exhaust after-treatment systems like DPF (diesel particulate filter) and SCR (selective catalyst reduction).

A public-private partnership that includes ISE Corp, Lee County Transit, the Florida Department of Transportation, Coach Crafters Incorporated, Gillig, and Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) inspired the deployment of the ISE Corp hybrid drive system, which powers a 40’ Gillig bus. The decision to go with ISE’s clean energy solution puts Florida on the map as the first state outside California to supplement their mass transit fleets with ISE’s ultra low emission gasoline hybrid drive system.

Rick Sander, CEO and President of ISE Corp, said, “Moving into Florida is a monumental step for ISE. It marks another milestone in our growth and initiative to introduce reliable, sustainable, and low-emission solutions for mass transit across all states in the US.” Agencies choosing to supplement their fleets with ISE gasoline hybrids can operate more efficiently with reduced maintenance and fewer road calls while exceeding CARB (California Air Resources Board) and EPA-2010 emission standards.

Steve Myers, LeeTran Director, said, “Our goal is to demonstrate how ISE’s technology compares to existing clean diesel and diesel electric technologies. We can understand how this gasoline hybrid technology works for Florida and results in improved economy and lower maintenance than existing clean diesel and diesel electric technologies.” With ISE’s ultra low emission gasoline hybrid drive system in their fleet, LeeTran and Florida continue their tradition of innovative approaches to effective mass transit.

Wayne Wolf, President of Coach Crafters Incorporated, said “We are very excited to be a part of this project with ISE and LeeTran. We look forward to supporting ISE on this and future deployments of their gasoline hybrid system.”

Gasoline hybrid drive systems give transit agencies an alternative to conventional diesel with simple exhaust after-treatment, quieter operation, lower tail-pipe emissions including PM, CO2, and NOx.

SAN DIEGO, CA, September 30, 2009 — Since ISE Corporation filled its first order for gasoline hybrid buses with San Bernardino County’s Omnitrans in 2001, many other transit agencies have followed suit. By supplementing their fleets with ISE gasoline hybrids, these agencies are operating more efficiently with reduced maintenance and fewer road calls while exceeding the latest CARB (California Air Resources Board) and EPA-2010 emission standards.

“Transit agencies that have adopted ISE systems have furthered our development process and helped us build up to the levels of reliability that we can offer today. Partnering with customers like Long Beach Transit, who are really pioneers, has helped ISE develop an efficient, cleaner alternative to diesel systems,” said Rick Sander, ISE’s President and CEO.

Transit Agencies Choosing ISE’s Gasoline Hybrid Systems
“Today, nearly half of our 40’ fleet at Long Beach Transit is comprised of gasoline hybrid systems. We began partnering with ISE’s engineering team in 2003 to help create a gasoline hybrid system that continues to improve in reliability,” said Rolando Cruz, Executive Director and Vice President of Maintenance and Facilities at Long Beach Transit. ISE gasoline hybrid systems make up the majority of the fleet at Long Beach Transit. The agency’s impetus to change came from a vision of working with ISE that Jim Ditch, then at the helm, communicated to his successor Rolando Cruz. Long Beach Transit’s partnership with ISE resulted in the first large production order for gasoline hybrid systems in revenue service.

“The service and support that the staff at ISE provides ensures that we are well trained to maintain this part of our fleet, and their continued technical support gives us the confidence that we have a partner working with us,” said James Samuel, Maintenance Manager at Fresno Area Express.

A Smoother Ride for Public Transit Bus Passengers
“Our ISE gasoline hybrid buses provide excellent acceleration and a smooth, quiet ride that is important to our passengers,” said Richard Hunt, General Manager, Metro San Fernando Valley. Performance and comfort are key drivers for transit agencies because they are important factors that can positively influence ridership.

Greater System Reliability of Buses Reduces Delays, Down Time
“ISE Corp’s hybrid drive systems have allowed us to drastically improve our mean distance between road calls,” said Claire Spielberg, Chief Operating Officer of Transit Services at San Diego Metro Transit. System reliability is a critical requirement for transit agencies and reduced road calls translate into uninterrupted service for passengers and lower costs overall.

“With our gasoline hybrid buses we have seen a dramatic reduction in how often we perform routine brake replacements. In over 8.5 million operational miles we have only conducted 3 brake relines,” said Juan Vigil, QA and Maintenance Technology Manager at Long Beach Transit. Increased brake life is directly related to regenerative braking functionality that is a critical part of the ISE gasoline hybrid system. Regenerative braking recaptures kinetic energy from the vehicle and recharges the vehicle’s energy storage system resulting in greater fuel efficiency.

Gasoline Hybrids Expand Beyond California
“We are awaiting delivery of our first gasoline hybrid bus, which meets our goals for sustainability and makes us the first city outside of California to deploy an ISE gasoline hybrid system,” said Carmen Monroy, Grants Analyst at Florida’s LeeTran. LeeTran and ISE are working together in a public/private partnership sponsored by Florida Department of Transportation.

ISE Meets 2010 Emission Standards
“Transit agencies have demonstrated their dedication to improving air quality by choosing ISE’s gasoline hybrids. ISE solutions provide a technology leap that delivers substantially lower emissions than those permitted by the EPA’s diesel standards for 2010,” said Alex Bernasconi, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing at ISE Corp.
